Description

Few chopping boards are as hardy as those made from teak. Even fewer are lovingly hand carved by artisans in villages in Indonesia. Fewer still would get my personal designation of "Art Piece" for the home.

Teak or Tectona Grandis is native to mainly Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand and Burma.

Teak wood contains an oil that helps the wood to be water resistant and also protects the Teak from decay, insects and bacteria. Java teak is considered by experts to be the best in the world. 

For me, one of the other qualities not often talked about is that they take a real beating. All that chopping and cutting and pounding over the decades does not degrade them; rather the distressed wood will take on a beauty of it's own. This is truly a multi-generational piece.

Teak Chopping Boards are carved from roots that would otherwise rot over the next few decades.  Holding them in your hand, this dense hardwood has a tactile quality that is hard to describe in a way that justifies it.  

Handmade in Indonesia these Teak Chopping Boards are hand carved using the natural shape of the teak root for that particular shape the artisan is seeking.

It stands to reason that no two boards are alike. The shapes will be slightly different and the grain colouring of the wood most certainly so.

All trees have roots, but no two trees have the same root system, just as no two people have the same fingerprints. 

Hence, it is a unique and gorgeous work of natural art with beautiful lines; with grains that ebb and flow; with natural distress from the twists and turns the root has taken through the stony soil.

It is functional art. If you like wood objects, the beauty of Teak Chopping Boards cannot be over-stated.

Being a hardwood you can feel the artisan's considerable effort that has gone into this Teak Bowl's creation.
